We’ve done the research, taken inspiration from the latest trends, and now our colour experts at Bristol Painters & Decorators have compiled a stand-out guide to different types of paint for your home in 2024.
Matt Paint
Matt paint is smooth and unlike sheen, doesn’t reflect as much light and therefore it isn’t shiny. It’s ideal if you need a finish that provides a clean canvas. Matt paint has a quick drying time of around two hours, leaving your walls smooth and elegant. Matt paint also has a soothing, calming effect as it absorbs light instead of reflecting it. You may find that matt paint helps cover imperfections and bring out the best in your rooms. However, matt finishes are often more prone to scuffs and scratches making them less durable than other paint types.
Eggshell Paint
Eggshell offers a slightly higher sheen than matt but is still much lower than some other paint types. Like matt paint, eggshell can be a useful for covering imperfections. Eggshell refers to the finish the paint results in which is flat and smooth. Unlike the matt paints, eggshell paints are more durable and can therefore be used more frequently on walls and skirting boards.
Satin & Silk Paint
The next level of finish is a silk or satin paint which has a higher sheen than eggshell and matt. Satin/silk paints have greater reflectiveness and durability as a result. Satin paint is adaptable as its appearance changes with lighting. However, in comparison with matt and eggshell finishes, satin paint doesn’t cover imperfections on the wall.
As satin/silk paints are more durable and have better sheen finishes than matt and eggshell. They can be better choice for wood & metal materials. Silk is similar to satin because it offers a similar sheen level but is designed for use on rooms that require more durability such as hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Gloss Paint
Gloss paint is the most reflective type of paint, providing a mirrored effect on interior surfaces. It is mainly used to paint trim because of its highly durable nature. Gloss is often used to enhance the light in a room through clean & sharp trims and on walls. Gloss is the opposite of matt paint as it reflects light and brings energy to every room. But it doesn’t cover imperfections and should only be applied to smooth surfaces. Bumps and holes will be highlighted by the lighting. Gloss is great on wooden trim around the house, in bathrooms and kitchens, where surfaces need to be wiped down regularly.
